Comment from the Coach
Team,
A disappointing game today but
one where the final scoreline of a 1-4 loss did not reflect the true nature
of the game. I feel we deserved 2 or 3 goals - we had the opportunities but
lacked the finishing quality to convert the opportunities. South Park are a
good side and we can draw a lot from the fact we have now scored half their
goals conceded this season.
We scored the first goal courtesy of a great left foot strike from James
- after having a identical warm up shot 1 minute earlier.... We held
them well for the next 25 minutes, then gradually started to ebb away. We
are still failing to deliver some of the essential basics - being first to
the ball on throw-ins/re-starts, competing for the ball in the mid-field and
a marked reluctance to head apart from in defence. If you watch your
favourite premiership team play, you will see heading is a critical part of
the game - we just do not do enough of it.
But on the positive side, having a full squad of 14 players meant you could
give 100% - then we could shuffle you around effectively as you tired.
Jack played another very solid defensive game using his pace and vision
to bolster the defence. Francesco made some great instinctive saves
and his kicking has improved dramatically.
Man-of-the-match today was Gareth
- a very energetic display despite a kick to the thigh - good determination,
committed heading and effective clearances.
As an aside, I will be lodging a complaint against the referee today (first
time I have done that...) - he did not get out of a walk today and therefore
basically stayed around the centre circle. A ref cannot control the game
from 40 metres away and he lacked any real commitment - he just did not want
to be there today. The fact that he had played a game that morning and was
"tired" was his problem not ours....
